Conducting Program
The month-long EAMA summer conducting program is ideal for emerging as well as mid-career conductors.
In addition to EAMA’s core curriculum, it includes:
- 2 conducting sessions with chamber orchestra*
- 1 conducting session with string quintet
- 5 conducting sessions with two pianos
- subject to availability, possibility to conduct a vocal ensemble or chorus
- 3 private studio lessons
Throughout the month, we focus on applied analysis: hearing with understanding. Our integrated approach helps you gain practical mastery in real-life conducting situations. You’ll discover that keener musical perception informs gesture, bringing you flexibility, variety, and control.
At EAMA’s conducting seminars and lessons, you’re invited to explore works you may be preparing for auditions or performances in addition to our assigned repertoire.
EAMA’s approach draws on and extends the teaching of Nadia Boulanger in her famous “accompaniment classes” at the Paris Conservatory, where she ensured that students did more than merely intellectualize their knowledge; they experienced it.
Note: in two-piano seminars, it is the conductors themselves who play and sing, taking turns conducting one another. Keyboard tasks are calibrated to each student’s level of keyboard facility.
Course repertoire is chosen in consultation with accepted students.
*The instrumental conducting lab ensemble is drawn from the Ensemble Monceau, directed by Edouard-Axel Moubachir.
