Composition Readings and Critiques

EAMA’s Composition Readings and Critiques are a unique feature of our program. Each is a stimulating laboratory where students workshop their pieces.

The EAMA composition faculty along with the performers explore with the student composer changes and revisions in real time.

Unlike at many festivals, where works are quickly read and critiqued, at EAMA, our performers carefully rehearse each work and meet with each composition student in an individual coaching prior to the reading.

This program offers a rare opportunity to hear your work several times during the summer and allows you to assess how suggested changes (from the faculty, performers and yourself) can have significant impact on your music.

Each student composer will then have their work read and recorded at the Reading and Critique Masterclasses. Students then receive a recording of their work.

2026 Reading and Critique Opportunities:

String Quartet: Selected works will be coached, read and recorded by The EAMA Resident String Quartet made up of students from The Juilliard School.

Art Song: Selected songs will be coached, read and recorded by soprano Rebecca Myers and pianists TBA

Vocal Quartet: Selected works will be coached, read and recorded by the EAMA Vocal Quartet.

“I have grown as a musician. The workshop really helped my learning experience this summer.”
